Activities
During this academic year we the brothers of St. Dominic’s Ashram along
with our studies were involved in number of activities such as social work,
pastoral work, conducting awareness program, charitable works, and
evangelization. All these programs helped us to be more available to the
people in their need in any field. I would like to highlight
some of those activities by which people benefited a lot.
Our education system has produced genius personalities, but is he of
she has not built his life on the firm ground of moral, social and
spiritual values, his or her knowledge will be a threat to the Society.
In our Society we find many young people depressed and unhappy
although they have a financially secured life. The words of Toynbee
resound: “the biggest threat to our society is not any enemy from
outside but the decay from within”. The DFNS team tried to bring
back the lives of many young men and women who were experiencing
the “decay from within”.
Regular activities of the Dominican Fathers Nagpur Society
are mentioned here below.
Education: Twenty Four Students are regularly attending the College
studies at St. Francis De Sales College Seminary Hills.
The students at Dominican ashram are encouraged to participate in
holistic approach towards education and take part in the extra-curricular activities of the Institute for the overall development of the
students. The DFNS team conducted a Collage Competition for the
students on the theme “Importance of Media in today’s World”
The students were divided into four groups. All the groups presented
their theme very creatively. The Collage was judged by Miss. Roseline
Nitnaware. Mr. Prathik group was awarded with the first prize.
Library: DFNS Library consists large number books. The students
use the library to gain knowledge on various faculties.
The library helps them to prepare well for their exams as well to have
further knowledge in a concerned field of Study. The Dominican
Fathers Nagpur Society’s Library caters to the intellectual and
academical needs of the students of St. Dominic’s Ashram.
The spacious library contains books and journals from various genres
numbering more than ten thousand. Besides a number of magazines
and journals are also subscribed. The library is annually updated.
The library is made available for the requirements of students who
use the books for their study and submission of assignments and
dissertations on various subjects. Further the library is also frequented
by professors of various faculties from the Ashram as well as St.
Charles Seminary who require it to prepare the study material for the
students and in preparation for their lectures. It also helps the residents
to prepare inspirational talks and seminars for various other occasions.
Though most of the books in the library are in English there are also a
handful of books and journals in other languages such as French, Latin,
Greek and Hindi. The library has a librarian to look after registration
and issuing of books.
Medical Aid:
A great number of people come to the Dominican Ashram in order to
get medicine and to look forward for financial support during their
time in the hospitals.
Dominican School Ministry:
One of the important activities which we undertook in our studentate
was, school ministry, where we reached out the high school students
of many schools at Nagpur and Wardha. DFNS members put their
whole heart and mind to prepare sessions and the audio- visual show to make this ministry a successful one. During this
ministry we tried to impart to them various values, the role of faith in
one’s life, and made them aware of social situations. The participation of the students was good and they benefited a lot from
this value education program. The responses of some of the teachers and
students after such program were really encouraging and motivating.
The DFNS team is involved in conducting value educational
programmes for the school children in and outside the city.
They also have taken up renewal programmes for the school children
along with the co coordinator of DFNS Fr. Prasad George.
The team and the voluenteers made their debut into the school
ministry when the sisters of St.Joseph of Champery invited to give a
value education programme for their high school students at Kampatee.
The programme consists of songs, skits and talks group discussions
and personal counselling. The interaction with the students told the
team that they need guidance and proper motivation for life.
The members of the Dominican Fathers Nagpur Society go to
Nagpur’s different centres in and around Nagpur for their social
work daily. We have at the moment almost five centres where our members render
their service. The children belonging to different castes and religions
come together in the centres in order to learn and study various things.
Our membes take special efforts in teaching and preparing them.
This is a unique experience for our members, relating and interacting
with the young minds.
The children look foreward to these classes and they try to profit
out of them.
Our institution has decided to create forum where all the children
from the centres could assemble together in order to share, and
communicate with each other and above all come to know each
other to some extent. That is the reason we organize every year a childrens meet in our
institution. The members themselves take initiative in organizing this
meet under the direction of a person in charge of the social work. Hence this year too we have organized the childrens meet on the 14th
December 2014 at St Dominic’s premises.
There were around 230 children from all the centers in and around
Nagpur who participated in the meet.
The meet began with Inaguaration and the prayer song. Our chief
guests this year were few of our sponsors who every year contribute
generously for the children meet. They were present this year too with
their valuable contribution in different forms.
The children meet primarily consisted of various sports competitions
which were held in the morning. Various competitions were held both
for boys and girls who were separated into different groups based on
the age. The children were extremely happy and enthusiastic in
involving themselves actively in the competitions. Our members
animated them and conducted the games.
After the competitions there was an hour for lunch break. The
food was prepared by our own members who tasted delicious and
was appreciated by all. After lunch the afternoon section was devoted for the cultural
programmes in the St Dominic’s premises. There were various
cultural competitions planned and organized by our members of the
Dominican Fathers Nagpur Society which were based on the age
groups.
There were solo dance, group dances, solo singing, group singing,
fancy dress solo and group etc. The competitions lasted almost
3. 30 hours.
At the end of the competitions the rector of the Seminary, Rev Fr
Paulson Deepak delivered his message to the children. He emphasised
the need of study which leads one from ignorance to knowledge. He said when one has knowledge he is able to work w and live happily
and and with confidence. Then the most important moment came
which was the prize distribution. The children eagerly waited for the
announcement of the winnerss. as the announcement of the winners
was done there was a huge shouting and uproar. The prizes were
istributed both by fr Paulson Deepak and fr Thomas Mathew.
The children departed seminary campus with a sense of hope and
fulfilment, with a future hope to come back again in the year 2015.
In the area of social work our members attend to the sick, lonely and
socially marginalized people of our society. They are also ready to
donate blood to the needy whenever a need arises.
Sports Day Conducted for Basti Children
A day of Sports was conducted for the children of Ganga Nagar (Basti) under the leadership of Bro. Praveen. The event commenced
at 2.00 pm. Fr. Naveen was the Chief Guest of the day. The day
was marked with the spectacular parade by the kids. The whole
group was divided into four groups and each group was named and
ollowed by various games. The group called BALARAM won the
championship and Ramu Prasad was adjudged as the sportsman of
the day. The event came to end with a mesmerizing dance by the
children
Seminar for Youth:
In this competitive world the youth are always put under pressure for
achievements . they experience a lot of stress and traumas to reach up
to the expectations of their parents and society.
In such a world of tension and busy schedules they often forget the
norms of the society. DFNS members under the leadership of Fr.
Arun Francis had seminar in which Fr. Arun focused on various
difficulties of the youth and their problems and motivated them to
overcome their difficulties to give make use their potentialities for the
growth of the Society.
Computer Education for Youth
Dominican Fathers Nagpur Society’s members conducted ‘Computer
Basics’ (CB), a short term computer basic course for the youth of Rosary Parish
in May, 2014.
The objective of the course was to impart basic level computer
knowledge with more emphasis on hands on training. The course
was conceived as to boost the concept of introducing a course on
computer fundamentals, especially for students and to equip them to
use the computers in day-today life for professional and personal use. After the course the
participants were able to acquire confidence in using computer
techniques, recognize the basic components of computers and
terminology, understand data, information and file management,
create documents using Word processor, Spreadsheet & Presentation
Software, browse the internet, content search, email and collaborate
with peers, use E-Governance applications etc. The course was a huge success as many
youth from the Parish and its vicinity participated in it.
Conclusion: The activities that were done throughout this year was
an tremendous experience to every member of the DFNS group as
they were able to contribute to well being of the entire humanity.
The members of the DFNS continue to do the follow up of the works
that are being done in various places so that they can truly extend
their concern to the poor and marginalized member of the society.
